(Top highlight)

I’d like to start with the following quote from Paul Adam’s “The Dribbbilisation of Design,” a powerful read that examines the superficiality of modern product design portfolios, often containing Dribbble posts that look good, but don’t solve actual business problems.

“If product design is about solving problems for people within the constraints of a specific business, then it simply feels that many people calling themselves product/UX designers are actually practicing digital art. They are Artists. They are Stylists. Executing beautiful looking things, certainly an important skill, but not practising product design.”

My original plan was to write a piece examining the hype surrounding shadows, gradients, and blobs, citing this source as an inspiration. In other words, an article agreeing with how Dribbble is gradually becoming a graphic design platform in the sense that most posts will never become actual products.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this would be betraying my own roots. As someone who, when starting out, also

  1. loved using gradients

  2. drop-shadowed everything

  3. set my corner radius to be 10+ pixels

  4. obsessed over liquid vectors from Adobe Stock

  5. mindlessly threw the term “UI/UX” around my friends because the acronym sounded cool,

I definitely felt called out after reading this article. But as a rookie, that didn’t bother me since I know I have a lot more to learn on the subject (not to mention I still do some of the above to a certain extent today).

One of my most “Dribbble-like” posts. 3D renders, blobs, gradients, the whole thing.

So what’s my stance on “The Dribbbilisation of design” or even Dribbble as a platform, then?

Put simply, that this article addresses a prominent issue in today’s tech ecosystem surrounding design as an art form rather than a problem-solving tool. However, it would be naïve and hypocritical to only pin the blame on the less experienced.

Let me explain by using one of the most popular tools in the industry: the user persona.

(Meet Lisa.)

female avatar
Lisa. HCI Grad with 4+ years of experience under her belt.

Lisa is an experienced designer and developer fresh out of a university with an HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) degree. During her four years, she was immersed in a highly prominent tech community that helped her land several related internships. Armed with this knowledge, Lisa goes on to apply for a UX job at Banana, a tech company with a beautifully designed platform.

有了这些知识,Lisa便继续向Banana(一家拥有精美设计平台的科技公司)申请UX工作。

During Lisa’s journey from education to employment, she realized early on that visuals weren’t everything. The experiences she had in her internships and in the classroom taught her that sketches, diagrams, and mind maps were just as important as polished Figma files. She also learned product architecture and even published several case studies as summative projects.

(Meet Jason.)

male avatar
Jason. Business grad new to the industry.

Unlike Lisa, Jason didn’t even know about user interface or user experience design until his junior year. Up to that point, he was a business student studying to hopefully one day go into banking. However, he developed a passion for design after creating a promotional campaign for his school’s tech club. Soon, Jason decided to venture into the field of UI and UX to hopefully land the same role at Banana.

Keep in mind Jason wasn’t exposed to the same background as Lisa. He also didn’t want to invest in bootcamps, so instead, Jason learned off of reading Medium posts and doing redesigns of his favourite brands. He quickly discovered the basic visual principles of UI (hierarchy, colour elements, etc.), and Dribbble was one of the main sources behind this learning.

Jason was daunted by the fact that all of the design jobs he applied for required 5+ years of experience with tools like Sketch, Adobe XD, and Framer. Looking at the beauty of Banana’s interface, Jason decided that it would be more efficient to pick up these hard skills rather than learn the supposed “uglier” aspects of product design work like research methods and usability testing. When Jason eventually applies, he has a beautiful visual portfolio lauded by peers but does not meet the recruiter’s expectations.

See what I am getting at here?

Jason’s design education led him to pursue a visual approach to design with even being aware that a problem-solving side exists. It’s commonly regarded that a lot of design recruiters have outrageous technical requirements for their candidates. Therefore, it’s a no-brainer that the majority of the population would devote more effort to perfecting their Figma skills rather than spend that time learning product architecture.

In other words, for beginners, images serve as the most convenient way to validate the skills they’ve learned. And this mindset shouldn’t be their fault.

My earliest Dribbble shot of a bunch of screens

Generally, there’s a large disconnect in the design community today between leaders and up-and-coming learners. That’s one of the main reasons I started writing for the UX Collective –– to reconcile the divide between those with non-technical backgrounds and those with high expectations. Nevertheless, both parties need to do better in communicating to each other.

A note to beginners (including myself): It’s perfectly okay to post on Dribbble and adopt the conventional style at the start. But down the line, recognize that the best methodologies in product design come from a critical obsession over the user and the business. Do you centre your work to garner approval or incite meaningful change? Always keep in mind that the functional version always triumphs the better-looking one.

Phone screen

A note to design leaders and recruiters: Not all applicants come from the same background. Therefore, they will inevitably have a different perspective on what good and bad design looks like. Downplaying their efforts instead of offering advice is hypocritical since design itself is subjective. Instead, look at what you can do to ensure your candidates produce consistently higher quality works in the future. Is it changing your expectations? Is it reweighing the hiring requirements to focus more on problem-solving than visual portfolio evaluations?

As the most experienced members of this community, it’s on you just as much as its on them to change the perception of “UX design” from digital art to something greater. And this does not mean just putting out a few diagrams; it means proactively educating the public on what you want from your talent.

As an individual considering a career in design, I know I’ll have to work harder to inject more purpose and meaning into my work. The Dribbbilisation of Design is a fantastic and galvanizing essay, but also keep in mind that we all need to collaborate to craft stronger user experiences.
